Return line creates a whirlpool and makes a sucking noise. Happens pretty often. The eyeball is pointed down towards the ground. What is causing this?

3,

At first glance it does not make a lot of sense, so tell us more...

How many returns does your pool have?

Are they all doing this or just this one?

Does the return have a lot of air coming out when you see it?

What happens when you don't point the return down? Why is it even pointing down??

What kind of pump do you have? Single speed or VS?

On the surface I can't see how a return could make a sucking sound??? Is your return just an open port or is it one of those rotating returns?

Thanks,

Jim R.

Change the direction of that return fitting. Have it face out or to the side more rather than down. The downward flow is just creating a vortex. It can happen with high waterflow rates at a return.

1 return so only this one is causing issue. It is not a rotating return.

It does not look like any air is coming out. Just occasionally there’s a whirl pool.

I pointed down thinking it would create better flow. What is the optimal position?

I have a Hayward super pump 1.1 HP. Single speed.

Thanks!

What is facing out mean? Does that just mean face is straight on? Also, when facing to side, should it be towards the wall (which is a foot away) or away from wall?

3,

With only one return, I am not sure it makes a lot of difference how you point it, except not down.. If this were my pool, I would point it to the left or right and pointed slightly up.

Thanks,

In the picture the return is facing downward. Loosen the collar and turn the "eyeball" more outward, left or right toward the skimmer. Or, let it alone, it hurts nothing
