finalizing my pool order/drawing and this is where they placed 2/4 of the returns. i guess i place the other 2 myself. any thoughts? (the orange dots are the two returns). there are two step jets on the baja ledge as well.

the wind does go left to right in this image

If the wind goes left to right, you want the skimmer facing the wind...wind is going to push everything away from the skimmer as pictured. You will have lots of stuff settle on the ledge with the wind direction.

Can you flip the pool 180 degrees and put two skimmers on the long wall?

nope, this is about the only layout the shape works. my secondary leech field screwed every other option up.

i was thinking to maybe put one of the other returns on the bench (i have 2 more returns to place somewhere) or i could add a couple step jets yet. they aren't too expensive.

so would you flip flip the return and the skimmer on the "top" of the image?

I certainly would put the skimmer mouth facing prevailing winds.

does that look better? it seems they want the skimmers opposite of each other. we like this bench arrangement better for sure. (facing away from the sun and towards main seating area).

is it odd to have the return in the corner like that next to the bench? would it be better to put it on the bench or to get a couple step jets for the bench so it has some water movement?

I think wind direction should be the deciding factor. Royal placed mine on opposing walls as well. It looks like yours are stamped into the 8' panels, so you can interchange them with any of the blank 8' panels. Mine was a bit simplified with only 2 skimmers, but here's how I laid mine out.

im thinking maybe something more like this? i cant get my exact prevailing wind direction (the two closest weather stations seem to differ). but this looks like it would give decent circulation.

i do plan to try to mitigate the wind with fencing/landscaping.

where's that from? i'm actually in redwood valley which is a bit from there but the weather differs. and North and West means its blow FROM that direction correct?

I would want 3 skimmers with a 2" line from each to the equipment.

Maybe (2) 2" returns or (3) 1.5" returns.

Pipe Size and Flow Rates.

You want to keep the water velocity below 6 ft/sec on the suction and below 8 ft/sec on the pressure side of the pump.[7]

Pipe Size6 ft/sec8 ft/sec
1.5"38 GPM51 GPM
2"63 GPM84 GPM
2.590 GPM119 GPM
3.0"138 GPM184 GPM
4.0"235 GPM312 GPM

This looks as good as you can get...

would you be willing to tell me where you would place the skimmers? i had planned to plumb with 2.5"

this is the reply from royal pools. their attitude has shifted to annoyance since i've paid. imagine that

We make suggestions based on our experience about what's best for your pool. If you think you know your situation better, do as you please. If you want it drawn that way, reject it and thoroughly explain why. Just bear in mind the more back and forth you do, you are delaying the shipping time. If you move the skimmer to where you want in the shallow end, you leave most of the shallow end without any suction. I do not recommend it but go for it if you feel the winds are strong enough to act as a return and fight the current.
