I went into the pool today to take out the fixture with the burned out bulb. I saw such deterioration in the niche area (see photos - gasket had completely disintegrated) that I decided to look at the other working light area as well so I removed it. The gasket too had disintegrated, but the issues were not the same. The first light had a brown material in the bottom of the niche that was also disintegrating - teh working light simply had some of the diamondbrite built up at the bottom of the niche. Interestingly, the lights were different types (both Pentair SpaBrite series)- one was 120 V and the other 12 V. My son thinks the second light was added 11 years after the pool was built (10 years ago today). I am going to open the 120 V fixture and replace the bulb - it takes a 250 W T-4 bulb - series 77xxx (the other takes a 100 W R-20 - series 7810xx).
I have some questions:
1) Is it possible to replace the existing bulbs with LED bulbs (ideally colored LEDs for pools)? Now that both are out, I might as well replace both bulbs so I don''t need to do this again shortly.
2) Should I have any concerns about the condition of the niches. I have some photos I took today attached. Some substance seemed to deteriorate at the bottom of one of the niches (I have photos of the remaining brown stuff on the niches and of the parts I removed that crumbled in my hand). I am suspicions it might be a sealant the repair guy used to fix a leak in 2011. The spa is leaking now and while I have identified some leaks bu the pumps, it would not surprise me if there is a leak at the shell area too. I have some dye on order coming Thursday to check for leaks.
3) I assume I should order new gaskets for both lights. Do they take the same one? I had trouble understanding from the specs - looks like part 79108600 for the 120 V and 79108500 12V.
thanks for any input.
