I did the same thing last year and remembered but lazy.

After we battle high CYA with pucks we start hating it and avoid it no matter what they recommend here but it helps.

Been battling to keep my FC around 6 even with my edge 40 at 50% running 19 hours a day. Starting to wonder if my SWG was failing then remembered my CYA was around 60.

Bought 4 pds and raised it closer to 85 or 90 and after 3 days of no changes my FC was at 14 over double.

Dropped the edge to 38% and only 17 hours and after a few days it’s at 12.

Just dropped It down more but not too aggressive since warm weather will
Be here soon.

Yes, it is a bit of paradigm shift when one goes from manual chlorination to an SWG. The protective benefits of CYA can not be overstated for a device that adds FC slowly as an SWG does.

My CYA was 50ppm recently and my IC60, which is rated at 4X my pool volume, was at a fairly high output. I added enough CYA to get it to 80ppm then promptly forgot to change my SWG output … let’s just say I’ve rarely ever seen DPD go so fuchsia pink before. When my CYA goes any lower than 70ppm, my pool struggles.

That’s how mine was. When I got to 20 drops ( I do the 10 ml ) I almost stopped but went to 28 and it finally started to change

It's funny because even up north with much friendlier UV demand, I knew right away mid season when my CYA dipped. Pre TFP I knew next to nothing about CYA other than I needed some when the FC wouldn't hold.

The pool store happily sold me Bioguard super soluble ($$$$) and the pool was back on autopilot for the rest of the season.

I will say that I generally hate BioGuard as they sell over-priced and unnecessary chemicals to unsuspecting pool owners. They are among the “bad actors” in the pool chemical industry. But their CYA brand is really the best!

My last bag of CYA came from ACE Hardware pool section. Worked ok but took a looooooooooooooooooooooong time to dissolve.

I was fleeced and saved at the same time. I paid Baqua-esque money to open the pool with the $40 bags of Mineral Springs Beginnings ($600 to $800 per year for freaking salt). But after that, my pool store heeded Bioguards rec to never use any non Mineral Springs products. So I avoided all the floccs, clarifiers, and phos treatments they sold to everybody else.

I needed 6 bags of plain jane salt to open this year for $8 each. TFP ALL the WAY.

Unofficial poll with made up number but same point.
My VSP runs 24/7

Better run my edge 40

1. 50% power 12 hours
2. 25% power 24 hours

My thinking being in IT all my life is low power so box isn’t powering on and off and less heat but curious what others think
