Refilling pool - how to start

I drained my pool completely and am refilling right now. CYA was off the charts when I bought the house. Drained half a couple years ago and got the CYA down to 80-90. got tired of maintaining the high levels of FC required.

Was just going to drain half again but I was a bad pool owner over the winter. Totally green with lots of dirt and debris at the bottom. Deccided to just start over.

Should I wait til it's full to start testing and balancing, or should I be doing anything now? Will probably take a couple more days to fill

Wait until the pool is full and water has circulated for 24 hours.

Pour 5 ppm of liquid chlorine in as soon as the pool is full.

What is the pH, TA & CH of the fill water?

Once the pool is full...

  1. Add 5 ppm of liquid chlorine to the water
  2. Get socks hung by returns to add 8 lbs of dry stabilizer to give you CYA round 30
  3. Lower your pH into the 7's with muriatic acid
  4. Your TA is fine
  5. After a few days check what your CH is and raise it to at least 250.

Thanks. Things are looking good. Stabilizer is up to 20 and I'm adding the rest right now. I've passed oclt twice but I'm losing 3 to 4 ppm per day. Is that normal until I get the stabilizer up?

Yes, that can be a normal level of FC loss to the suns UV.
