Refilling my pool and sand leaked in from the filter

Okay so I had a bad algae problem and after shocking, flocking, shocking, and clarifier (this was over a period of two weeks, I gave time for each to work) I was left with cloudy water and white flakes that would sink to the bottom but as soon as I tried to vaccuum it would stir up and refuse to filter out. I drained the pool down to about two feet of water and could still see some stuff on the bottom but went ahead and started filling anyway. It was clear up until it hit the filter ports and I, like an idiot, did not plug the ports to my sand filter. I checked the water before it hit the ports and it was clear, 15 minutes later I go out and I have light brown, cloudy water which I assume is sand because it is now above the filter ports. Has anyone had this problem and if so do i need to drain it again, just let it fill, settle and then vacuum, or will my filter get the sand out on it's own?

Welcome to the forum! :handshake:

Any thing that came out of the sand filter will settle and you can vac to filter or waste.

How do you test your water chemistry? Sounds like you have uses a number of pools store potions that TFPC does not recommend or use.

I suggest you read Pool School - ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Trouble Free Pool School.

I was using one of those basic kits from Walmart but I ordered a better one so hopefully I will be doing a little better with this. It turned out not to be sand from the filter but when I was filling the pool, my water company had a main break somewhere and a bunch of silt got sucked into the line. Since I was filling my pool all of that went in to it. I have been running the filter nonstop and it is clearing up slowly but surely. I backwash every 8 hours for a minute and it is brown coming out so I know my filter it doing the job.

What test kit did you order?

We suggest you order a TF100 test kit
The only other real option for a test kit is a Taylor K-2006-C. Be careful comparing prices because the K-2006 comes in sizes, designated by a letter. The basic K-2006 has .75oz bottles. You need to get the K-2006-C to get the larger bottles that you want. Even then it is a little short on the reagent & powder for the FAS/DPD test.

I also have the SpeedStir. It makes testing much easier.
