Hi, I took over this pool this summer and I was told it was resurfaced around 2017. I have these stains/marks around the pool that I can’t just scrub with a brush to clean up. I’ve heard about adding particular acids to the pool that would basically remove a layer of plaster to clean it up. Obviously I’m hesitant to throw acid in my pool that may remove plaster so I’m turning to this awesome community for some more opinions on this issue.

Now I understand pool plaster degrades over time, but I’m looking for some professional opinions on what I can do to clean up this look before next summer. If it’s best to leave it as is then I can understand that. Also, of note, this pool has a very high CYA (well over 100) and I already know I’m gonna have to drain half this pool to resolve the issue. With that in mind, would that change anyone’s approach to cleaning up these marks in the pool?

The first thing is to try and identify the type of stains you are dealing with...

None of those stains look bad enough to take the nuclear option of putting muriatic acid on it.

Thanks for the help. I’ll read through the articles you sent. No idea what type of stains these are, but ill figure it out.

If you your CYA is well over 100, then there’s a good chance your FC is too low and the stains could be black algae. I’d start with chlorinating the water appropriately for your CYA level before doing anything else.

I had some acorn stains that cleared up in a couple days after dosing the FC back up after my salt chlorinator stopped producing due to cold weather.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try and see if that helps.
