Above is a link to a video of a new Raypak 406a propane inground pool heater I had installed on Friday. Heater is working just fine but there's a slight rattle near the ports. Anyone else with Raypak propane heaters have a similar noise and was it part of the heater's normal operation?

Sounds like the internal bypass is bouncing (bad spring?) Or, the UniTherm governor may be as well. That is under that large castle nut, easy to check, use a screwdriver across the body to loosen and it will come out. Not normal operating sounds.

Thank you. I also emailed Raypak and they stated the water flow is probably too low and most noises are caused by insufficient water flow. I was eventually able to get the pressure down on the sand filter from about 20 psi to about 12 (backwashing several times this season hasn't having as much of an effect on filter pressure as compared to prior years) and the noise went away. The pressure is back up to 18 psi (despite backwashing several times this morning for about 30-40 seconds per backwash cycle and about 15 seconds per rinse cycle) and now the noise has returned but not as loud, so I guess it is a pressure issue although the water at the returns feels the same as prior years.

Have you ever used clarifier in the pool? A flocculant? These can clog the sand. There are sand-filter cleaners, that if used correctly, can help clear that and most anything else that may be impairing the sand.
A 30-40 second backwash is usually not enough. A 2-3 minute one is what is needed to get the filter clean. Yeah, that can be a lot of water at one time, but that is the nature of sand filters. Helps keep your CYA in check.

Thanks again for your reply. I have not used any clarifiers or flocculants: just chlorine as well as PH reducer, stabilizer, and calcium hardness increaser when needed. And understood re: backwashing but the 30-40 second backwashes done a few times until this year was always sufficient to bring the pressure down below 15 psi. I was just outside and gauge read 18 psi and a slight rattle from the heater header. Backwashed for 2 mins, rinsed for 30 seconds, backwashed again for a minute, rinsed again, and no change to the pressure. Scratching my head. Removed the top of the filter and found a black hose with a round filter at the end protruding into the air relief assembly. Not even sure what that is.
