My pool came with a purex DE separation tank. I've struggled to figure out it's value and whether I need it or not and so far I've just lived with it. Last season I broke the separation bag, dont remember how, but probably messing around with the valves and putting too much pressure. I did use the separation tank to backwash a few times and it is better than spilling DE all over the ground. But I think in the future (2-10 years), I will switch to a cartridge filter and avoid DE. Anyhow, I was searching for a new separation bag to hold me over until then, but it looks like these things are really expensive.

So I just came to ask, are these things really that expensive or am I looking at the wrong thing? I saw them for $300. I guess if they last 10 years then it makes sense, but I don't plan to have a separation tank that long. Can I buy something cheaper to capture some of the DE? Maybe put like a mesh laundrybag on the waste line hose?

You can give things a try and see what works.

I think DE is too fine to be held in a mesh laundry bag when dry. It may clump enough to be held in the laundry bag when wet.

How do you dispose of your DE?

DE will go through a laundry bag. You can try using "The Slime Bag" (Backwash/DE Slime Bag™ – 30x36” Flow rates up to 120 GPM - The Slime Bag) on the line.

Sediment Filter Bags, also known as Dirt Bags or Filter Pump Bags, are designed to control and filter silt and sediment had laden water during dewatering activities. Filter Bags are constructed of non-woven geotextile material that filters soil particles greater than 150 microns. While allowing discharge water to pass through the bag. Each bag has an adjustable spout to accommodate a discharge hose of up to 3 in.
  • Made of 8 oz. non-woven filter fabric
  • Large enough to be useful yet easy to handle
  • Can accommodate up to a 3 in. discharge hose
  • Filters out sediment and sand for safe disposal down the storm drain
  • Will handle a very high water flow rate
  • Can use the included tie string to seal bag

I use it for landscaping. So far mostly I placed a bunch aroudn the pool deck to see if it would stop worms from getting into the pool. But that seems to have failed. Next I'll just use it to fill holes and such.
