Pump selection for pool & spill over spa

Hello all,

I'm preparing to build my own pool using a kit from Pool Warehouse & need input on pumps & how to plumb a system.

My pool will be a 16x36 vinyl lined rectangle with full width steel steps. I will have an 89" round spill over spa made by Sunbelt.

I have been told that I need a 1.5 Hayward Superpump for my pool & a Hayward 2hp Superpump for the spa when in spa only mode. I plan to only heat the spa and want to be able to go into spa only mode where the water will no longer spill over.

My questions are:
Would I be better with a single pump to handles both pool & spa?
Should I go with a variable speed pump over single speed?
Ultimately I would like to use Haywards Omnilogic system to automate the spa only mode but are their better options?

Thanks for any advice you can provide & I look forward to sharing photos during my build.

Most of us with integrated spas in our pools use a single VS pump with an automation system and actuated valves to switch between spa and pool mode. It is more efficient, easier to manage, and simpler.

I use Pentair equipment to achieve this but am sure the Hayward automation and VS pump will do the same.

How do you plan to chlorinate? If with SWCG, be sure to get it in a model that will communicate with your automation system.

Take care.

Thanks for the response.

I will use a SWCG to chlorinate.

So far I'm building my automation system around the Hayward Omnilogic. I have purchased a Jandy 3 way vale & a Hayward actuator to control the system. I was told I need 2 pumps but a single pump system seems the simplest one to plumb & when in spa only mode the other pump would be sitting idle anyway.

Re: Pump selection for pool & spill over spa

You will need two actuators. One on your suction and one on your return. That will allow you to isolate the SPA during that mode.

I would contact InyoPools for advice on equipment. I do not know the Hayward system. I know with Pentair you can get an EasyTouch with an integrated power system for your SWCG and with Pool/Spa dual system hardware. That is what I have.

Take care.

Add SWCG to your signature. That will stop those questions in the future.
