Hey everyone. Woke up to my find my spillover hot tub not spilling and quickly realized the pump was not on. I have tried to start it and it makes and electrical hum like normal, but the pump doesn’t turn over. I live in NJ and it is pool opening season so can’t get anyone to come out. I believe I can replace it myself, but not sure what to purchase. I have included some pictures of the pump and set up. Looks like it is a jandy pump and centurion motor. It is probably 14 years old as that is how old the pool is. Please help!!

If the pump "hums" that is a pretty good indication of a bad starter cap, which should be easy to replace.

Thanks for the reply Jim. It only hums at the beginning, but stops once the pump doesn’t start. Is that what you mean? If so, is that the capacitor that would need replacing?

I bet Jim's right. If you decide to replace the motor yourself it's pretty easy for DIYer's that know how to wire a 240 vac motor. There are LOTs of great videos online that show how to do it on Swimming Pool Supplies - Pool Parts - INYOPools.com and others on You-Tube. At 14 years many experts would say replace the entire pump. I'd look closely at the condition of other parts like the pump bowel and other parts of the housing. If they fail soon you may be better off with an entirely new pump anyway.

Pull your capacitor and look at the uF rating.
The below reference indicates a 30 uF rating, but check yours to be sure.

Thanks Jim! You were right and I fixed it for $12 instead of calling the pool company who would have charged me $150 for even coming out.

Sounds like you won't need a motor any time soon. If you do need one someday just get the model info off the plate and shop around. As you've already found out inyopools can be very helpful for this. Keep an eye on the pump and at the first sign of any leak from the seal replace it. Seal leaks on the pump are the main cause of motor failure. Water flows down the shaft into the motor bearing assembly. Pretty soon after that it squeals like crazy and you'll be looking for that motor.
Congrats on the fix! You've just experienced first hand what happens when pool owners hook up with TFP experts! Cheap, quick solution vs the expensive pool store run around.
