Pump Dead?

Hi everyone, so I started a SLAM and was vacuuming the pool. There were a TON of leaves at the bottom and I figured I'd backwash the (sand) filter and I also popped off the screw on cap and cleaned out the basket that had some leaves in it. I turned the pump back to filter and hit the switch, at which time I heard it suck a ton of air in. I immediately shut if off and realized I left the cap off after cleaning the basket. I noticed it had filled back up with water so I just screwed the cap back on, hit the power and the pump came on but zero flow. I came to the forum researched and thought I needed to prime the filter and saw that one of the guys said to let it run for 3 min as it wouldn't hurt anything and that should be enough time to prime it. Well at the 2:20 sec mark the pump turned off and it was hot, but no smoke and no sparks. Man I don't know if I can even afford a new pump right now, I'm pretty bummed out so any advice would be helpful. Thank you

Lets back up a few steps:

-are all the valves open?

-Did any leaves get sucked into the pump?

Have you ever taken your pump apart to clean out the impalpable? If not find your manual online to see how it goes together AND take and share a picture of your pump. We can walk you through it if you need us to. The MOST important thing is to turn the power off at the breaker.

Hopefully we will get it all sorted out without you having to buy a new pump.

It might take some back and forth to work through what happened.
