Pump and Filter Upgrade?

Hi All!

Looking for some pros and cons with upgrading my current pump and filter.

I currently have the Intex 12” Sand Filter with 1/4 pump and also run the Intex SWG. Oh and I have a Hayward through wall skimmer as well.

Everything currently works fine but not sure I like the amount of flow it provides. Pool is clean for the most part but I seem to get very fine dirt on the bottom of the pool and can never get it all out. This of course takes away from the crystal clear water look as soon as it is stirred up a bit.

I have tried different micron bags and even socks to attach with standard Intex pool vac (garden hose), also have the triangle head vac that hooks into the filter, no luck.

Others have said to get a better vac like a dolphin but for a 3-4 month swimming season I’m not sure it is worth the cost.

Let me know your thoughts and thanks in advance.

For the filter/pump you have two options: buy new or check the typical used equipment sites in your area. This time of year, many people are getting ready for spring and some are parting with their usable equipment. Look for a 2 speed, 1hp or less model. You can pick the filter type you like. Either of the 3 types are suitable.

As for the fine dirt on the bottom, is is gritty or does it smear between your fingers?

Give us some direction and we can offer more advice.

Cheap option is to find the intex large cartridge cartridge pump, like the one in my sig, take the filter out and hook it up. Vac will be a little better buy still slow. They run $5-$30 used.

After that anything bigger than 1/2 hp and the filter will start showing it's short comings and will need a upgrade.

The scenario OP describes is more often then not a chemistry problem and not filtration.

Gotzoom, does this "fine dirt" roll up into a cloud when you brush it? Even if you brush the pool clean is it there the next day?

Can you post a set of current test results?

Intex pumps and filters are notoriously too small and under powered but I think you should eliminate any chemistry issues first..
