I have a 3 filter cartridge system. When pump is pumping air pressure builds up in filter tank hence lowering the level of water in the tank and therefore reducing the efficiency of the filters. To eliminate this problem I bleed of a small amount of air/water from the top of the tank. This is not an efficient way to keep the tank full. There seems to be no place for the air to come from. Could it be cavitation of the pump ?

Welcome to TFP!

Not cavitation but an air leak.

Air can leak in through the suction side of the pump usually in the pump lid and drain plug gaskets. The first thing to check is to make sure the pump lid gasket is in good condition and properly lubed. The next is the drain plugs and after that comes valve o-rings. All on the suction side of the pump.

Also, make sure that the pool level is at least half way up the skimmer.

In the filter there should be an air relief tube and screen that will allow air to escape before it lowers the water level. Which filter is this? If air is continually building you have a suction leak at the pump. Could be as simple as the pump lid O ring needing lube.
