Just had the pool opened yesterday, and for the first time in 3 seasons of ownership a pressure gauge is reading above 0 when the pump is off. After backwashing twice, the PSI was running at nearly 40 with the pump running (usually ran clean at 20 in the past) and it currently reads 15 PSI when the system is off. Is this more likely indicative of a faulty pressure gauge reading or something else? Thanks in advance...

Sometimes this is caused by a bit of debris in the gauge. I find it's a good indicator that it's time to start looking for a replacement. There's a pretty wide range of price. Online is usually better. Glycerine filled seem to last a lot longer, naturally they're more expensive

This thread reminded me that my pressure gauge is bad, so I just ordered the glycerin-filled one. There are not many other options out there (besides that one) that have a usable pressure range. We don't (shouldn't!) need a gauge that goes to 60 PSI..

Is replacing the gauge as simple as turning off the power and unscrewing the old and inserting the new? I can't seem to find any pressure relief valve/switch on my sand filter.

Basically - yes. Plus perhaps adding 2-3 wraps of teflon tape around the threads. Some sand filtes don't have an external relief valve. :)
