Proximity of swg to heater

Not sure about other manufactures, I've seen Pentair recommend a acceptable minimum of a 12-18 straight pipe in-front of their SWG, see page 5 of the product manual below. Now that said, I had my pool installed last year and my PB did not follow that best practice...everything works ok...and saying that, I intend to correct that to follow best practice / recommendation.

Follow the installation instructions for the RJ45+.

There was no such requirement when I installed my Hayward cell some 15 years ago. Just that there is a straight section before the flow switch and I used the SWG to be a part of that straight run. My SWG is probably a foot and a half after the heater. So the installation guidelines change from manufacture and over time. So as AJ sez.. follow the instructions for your cell.

For the RJ+45 you will need about 12"* after any bend before the flow switch. The Cell can count as that 12"*.

*Do not have the manual in front of me, and cannot download at work. Cannot remember if it is 12" or 18" before the flow switch. But the cell can count as the straight length for Circupool.

Edit: You could do a vertical install, which is what I did for ours. I have the flow switch on the up portion, setup in such a way that gravity opens the switch when no flow to ensure the cell is off. I not seen any restriction, or other issues, with this setup for the last two years.
