Proud owner of a glorious swamp!

Day 5 - Hour 1.5

Since I'm out of testing reagent, I added a jug of chlorine for kicks. Unless someone tells me different, I'll do this again tomorrow morning. I'm hoping the reagent will arrive today, but Monday or Tuesday seems more likely.

You guys think he is over backwashing? Need to let the pressure build up, forgot the math % of starting pressure. Your site glass will always be dirty while the pool is dirty.

Sand filter? Wonder how old the filter is, and the last time the sand was changed?

Thanks for the info on the sight glass. At this point I'm backwashing once a day. The Pool School lead me to believe I'd be backwashing more often and this would improve filtration. My need to backwash has been drastically reduced since dressing my skimmer basket like a fancy gal on the town. That is, I've been putting socks on the skimmer, and I've been changing them regularly. The baseline PSI is 10-11.

When the pump is running, I can usually see slight evidence of a wake from one of the three returns, but the others not so much (unless it's just after priming the pump, then they're all momentarily noticeable). The pull into the skimmer basket is never very strong.

It is a sand filter, the model is listed in my sig. We had it inspected when we bought the house, and the pool inspector said it was old but in good shape. I don't know if the sand was ever replaced, but posts on this forum have lead me to believe sand replacement is an unnecessary act.

What's this?

R-0871! My favorite! Thanks, TFTestKits! That was fast. Back to testing!

Day 5 - Hour 6 - FC:8.0 CC:0.5 - Adding 2.6 jugs of 121 oz @ 8.25%

You can almost see the third step!

And I can finally see this return line. Why is it that this area seems to collect leaves and dirt? Is this a circulation black hole?

Also, I managed to rip my new, luxury (okay, $10) leaf rake head. In the same way as last time! This is strong evidence for the alligator theory.

Day 5 - Hour 8 - FC:24.5 CC:0.5

I measured the addition precisely last time, so I'm a little surprised to see it a few points higher than SLAM two hours later. That might imply the pool is smaller than the pool inspector's estimate of 15K gallons. Or maybe the Clorox is some super potent stuff, yo.

Filter pressure gauge is reading only 1PSI over baseline, so I'm ignoring it and just swapping out the sock. We'll see where the pool is tomorrow.

Do you think we could go bow fishing for alligator in your pool?

Day 6 - Hour 0 - FC:14 CC:0.5

Appearance is much the same as yesterday, maybe a very slight improvement in clarity. Skimmer sock picked up some gunk and bugs, nothing major. Brushed, which kicked up 50 leaves. Raked and nabbed maybe 20. There's a "hard spot" in the deep end that I suppose is something organic and disgusting that's adhered to the pool floor; I can feel it with the rake, but not the brush. Pool filter gauge remains unchanged at 1 PSI over baseline. Overnight chlorine loss is still significant. Shouldn't CC be higher if I'm losing 7/8 ppm overnight?

One day we will get to see that gator!

I gotta tell you, I think a gator's going to leap up and bite whenever I stick my arm in there for a sample! Murk: dislike.

Day 6 - Hour 5 - FC:20.5 CC:0.5

No significant change to clarity. PSI at +2 over baseline.

Could it be a brick/block? Is it the main drain? I would not think anything could stay stuck on the liner under water.

Or it IS the gator and he is having fun with you!

Maybe. Or maybe something is stuck on the main drain? Never having seen the bottom of the pool before, it's tough to say.

Stupid gator.

Day 6 - Hour 7 - FC:20 CC:<1 - 5ml sample because I'm tired of titrating

Some sun came out. Replaced skimmer sock, which picked up a lot of weird white grit. PSI still at +2. I'll check it one more time tonight. Sorry no photos today. Here's hoping tomorrow we get to see the gator!

keep working at it, mine was so black and so full of rotten leaves and stuff, it still is not clear yet but I can see the remaining 20 or so leaves in the deepend. It took a while maybe 3-4 weeks, but I have been only testing twice a day as building the patio was job 1. But now that the patio is 3/4 complete and the main area is all complete, geeting the pool crystal clear will be top priority. Plus I am sick of digging, laying gravel, compacting, laying sand, and then placing brick, after brick, after brick. Oh and cutting them.

This entire thread has kept me laughing for the better part of an hour. I'm getting ready to go through all this also, though my pool is nowhere near the swamp that yours is trying to recover from. I have high hopes that I won't be spending hundreds on bleach n such.

So thanks for starting this thread. I was ready to buy a huge amount of dirt and fill the **** hole up and make myself a vegetable garden.

Day 7 - Hour 0 - FC:17 CC:<1 - 5ml sample

Backwashed, changed sock, brushed everything, raked, added some water, added 90oz of bleach. Slow progress. More chlorine retained overnight.

Can almost see the third step of the ladder.

Isnt your starting pressure 10psi. So 20% would now be asking for a backwash, others agree?

Didn't you just say two days ago that I could be backwashing too much?? :bounce:

I don't mind waiting 3-4 weeks for this pool to clear, as long as when it's all done I have a patio. :)

How about duct taping a garden rake to your skimmer pole (using a lot of tape) and trying to pull whatever that is out of the bottom. I think it will really speed this up if you can get that out. Or hire turtleman to go in after it.
