I shocked aiming for an FC of 22. After an hour, I measured FC:6 CC:1. That's one hungry pool! So I'm adding three more jugs:

Ah yes, this is bleach. Bleach acts like bleach. Right. Very bleachy this bleach. This is now and forever my shirt for handling bleach.

And here's an unrelated shot of a pile of boxes in my new house. This is not the only pile, but it's the one I'm least enthusiastic about unpacking.

I too have a bleach shirt. Strangely enough, since picking a shirt I don't care about to wear exclusively for daily bleach additions, I have not gotten any bleach on the bleach shirt. Go figure.

After another hour, I measured FC:7.5 CC:2.0. It's still green, but it's shifting towards military colors with this pale olive.

I am, for some reason, hesitant to stick my whole arm in the pool. I've been collecting my water samples using this high-tech solution:

The filter has crawled up a little, so I gave it a backwash. I experimented with a different placement of the hose and was rewarded with a fountain display that - I think you'll agree - rivals the one at The Bellagio at Las Vegas. The water settled a little close to the neighbor's yard, so I don't think this festivity will repeat itself.

I also cleaned out the pump basket. These pollen craplings sure hang on tenaciously.

Adding 2.7 more jugs, or rather 2 jugs plus whatever was left in the partially used jug. Hrm, I previously took 12 ounces from that jug, so I probably added 2.9 jugs instead. I'm pretty sure the pool will survive this terrible discrepancy.

I can also post a photo of the millipede that floated to the top of the pool after the first round of bleach, if your mad desire for pictures extends to murdered wildlife. Two frogs leapt out of the pool within five minutes of the first dose, within five seconds of each other. One smartly ran away, and the other jumped back in, submitting its entry to the Darwin Awards.

I have four bottles left. I'm probably going to have to step out for more after the next hour. This is going to be tricky, since the lady of the house is back in Atlanta cleaning up the old house for the closing on the 15th, this leaves me to comfort the pets. The dog in particular has been a pile of crazy, returning to my side after a delay of no more than 10 seconds. He scratched up two different doors while separated from me during the pack up and pick up in Atlanta, and I reaaaaally don't want that to happen here. Why can't there be a bleach drive-thru in Mt. Pleasant, SC?

After four plus hours: FC 10.0, CC:3.0. Both are climbing steadily.

Action shot of some raking. It seems like it never finishes. The more I rake, the more **** comes to the surface. Note my stubbornness at play, I didn't feel like removing the bottle just to tie it on again in an hour.

Under scrutiny: The purported wisdom of leaving the bottle attached to the pole while brushing.

After adding 2 jugs + 24 oz., less than two jugs of bleach remain in the shed. I have to sojourn for some more. The Lowes and Home Depot prices are outrageous for bleach. (Outrageous, I tells you.) I found these off-brand 8.25% jugs at a Dollar General that is liquidating everything at underwhelming prices.

I currently have the Jandy valve set to 50/50 skimmer to main-drain. Should I close off some main drain to pull more from the skimmer?

I went through THREE pressure gauges before finding a good quality one (make sure to get liquid filled). Since you are an Amazon Prime guy, this will be right up your alley. You can get one of these in almost any form factor. If you need helping picking the right one, take a picture of the current gauge and we'll help you out. Make sure to use the product filters to get to the right one, e.g. first select one that is liquid filled. I'm to the the whole pool thing, but my experience has been to buy a good quality gauge or you'll be replacing the junk one every year.

6 hours in. FC:9, CC:3.5, Sunburn:developing. Here it is after adding another 300oz of 8.25%:

The skimmer is looking nasty. I mean, if I was making beer I'd say that's a mighty fine krausen, but seeing as it's pool water it's pretty gross. The basket is clogging up very quickly, I guess I should check it more frequently during the start of the SLAM. Yes, I'm wearing gloves, it's nasty. Also the skimmer basket handle is broken.

I backwashed again. Maybe I'm doing it for too long, because after each time I think the water level looks low. This time I dragged the garden hose over to help bring it up a little.

The bleach run was meager. I have not had a good time locating bleach sources. CVS had nothing reasonable. Publix had four 121oz jugs for a mere $3.25, but beggars can't be choosers at this point so I scored them and asked someone to check the back for more, which came back negative. I then nabbed eight 64oz containers, which turned out to be cheaper. Of course.

Moving right along.

I told him to fetch bleach, he comes back with a quart of 6%, scented, at 4 cents/oz. Bad dog!

Ok, so being the stalker that I am, I googled a zip code for your city and checked ollies bargain outlet. There is one in North Charleston. 13 miles away from zip 29464.

The ollies here currently has 128oz jugs of 12.5% liquid chlorine for 2.99. Can't really beat that too easily. Since I don't really know where you are (as it should be) I don't know if it's close enough but if it is it might be worth it!

Fun times for us not so fun for you It can be done! It is just going to take time and LOTS of bleach.

Do you have a pool store near you or an ACE Hardware? In my area both are cheaper than store bought bleach with ACE being the cheapest AND closest.
