Problem blowing out pool lines

I see 3 "Jandy Valves" on the suction side. Please take another picture from the front. You have left, middle, right. Which valves are for skimmers and which one for main drains? Where are you pushing air through at this moment? Plug the return side in the pump basket (if you can, which I assume you can) and close off the skimmer's. Isolate everything beside the main drain. We kind of need to know where you are pushing air through. All the pipes are either "suction" or "returns". You have to close off the returns and skimmer's and only work on the main drain, if this makes sense.

With the "Jandy Valve" open in the main drain, push air through and once you see a lot of bubbles (45-60 seconds), then close off "Jandy Valve" and create the air lock. Shut off pump at the same time.

the left most one is for skimmers. Right now its in the middle, how do I turn both skimmers off. Is that even possible?

The middle valve is for the "main drain" as its labeled, and the right most is labeled "main drain return"

Is it possible, that the valves are mislabeled? Have you ever tested the system to see which valve goes where? If this is the case, then unscrew the "Jandy Valve" and lift up, but do not remove. The pins will clear the housing and you can turn it 180 degrees and this will lock the skimmers.

Make sure in the spring you place it back and take pictures or notes, whichever is easier. This way as you are pushing air through the system, it will go directly to the main drain. Please take a few more pictures of plumbing from front and other angles. Asked this before, where are you blowing air from?

Anthony-Sylvan by any chance? (The hose bibb and 'main drain return' are two things they do that most do not.)

To turn off both skimmers, the handle on the left most valve should point to the left. For both on, it points to the right. Select either one by having it point front or rear. You can also turn off both skimmers by turning the center handle to the right.

The way the Jandy valves work is the closing gate is opposite the handle. So if the nose (my word for the pointer opposite the handle) points at a pipe, that pipe is closed. If the nose points to the side of the valve with no pipe, then flow is unrestricted among all the pipes going to the valve.

The Main Drain Return is a trick A-S builds into their systems that allows the return to flow through the main drain instead of the wall returns. In theory, you can use it in the spring to accelerate warm-up by pulling water off the top and returning it at the bottom. It seems to work. Obviously, the main drain return valve and the main drain valve cannot be open at the same time, or you will be just recirculating water in a very short loop that does not reach the pool.

It also makes blowing out your lines a little tricky. Getting the order right is key. The way I do mine is:

Blow skimmers first. Open each skimmer in sequence (forward first, and then back on left valve, middle one with handle to the left, closing off main drain. MP at closed. I inject air from my compressor at the handy-dandy hose bibb. I apply 15 psi air, and use the hose valve to cycle it in bursts through each skimmer until no more water is blown out the pipe. Then plug skimmers at pool and leave left valve handle pointing to left closing both skimmers.

Then blow main drain from suction side. Center valve handle to the right. Right valve handle to the right. Open hose bibb and you should see a lot of air coming out the drain. Move center valve handle to left and quickly close down air. This locks air into main drain. Do not touch valves again. They should be with handles left-left-right.

Now the return side. Set MP to Recirc. Apply air which should now blow out returns. If below water line plug returns. You will want to cut air to maybe 6 Psi. I prefer to drop the water below returns and use the full 15psi. I plug all but the one return farthest from the filter and then blow it. Plug that and unplug second furthest. And so on. Then I blow the first one again and replug. Again, use the hose bibb to cycle air in bursts until no water comes out pool end of returns. Finally, set MP to Winter or halfway between any two settings if no Winter position.

You're done. Now open and drain filter, heater, etc.

Durk:

Very Well Spoken. My system is cut and dry. We are trying to figure out all the plumbing, but hard to do with the pictures.

I have an A-S system with the main drain return, so understanding his is easier for me, I suspect. He has two skimmer lines on the left, and the main drain in the middle. The returns are the down pipe on the right. The right hand valve allows return flow to reach the main drain pipe or flow out the wall returns.

Oh, I just noticed he has a pressure side cleaner. He will need to blow that line too. That can be done at any point in the process. I would say after the main drain, with MP still Closed. Open cleaner valve, apply air and then plug pool end. Then move MP to Recirc and do returns.

I look back and should have built a Plaster Pool. Too late now. Liners are nice, although you have to be careful and constantly inspect. Already had 2 small cuts and both were accidents from the PB, not me. Closed the pool last week with my 10 year old and the Cyclone. What a nice blower. Thanks!

Sorry all was away will try these steps hopefully this weekend!
