On one of my Aqua Genies, no matter how much teflon tape I put on it leaks air at the 2" threaded plug at the suction side. The other one just around 3 wraps and it sealed up nice. Being a temporary plug, can I use some joint compound for a leak free test.

My instructions recommend only using 20 lbs of air. Seems on the low side.
 
Pipe joint compound or pipe dope can glue PVC. So I would be careful what product is used and not ruin the threads in your new skimmer.
