Hi, I've got a quick question. We just went through a pretty big hurricane a few days ago. The day before I turned off my pump and super chlorinated my pool. Then a couple of days after (we left, we weren't home) I netted all the debris out of the pool and shocked some more. Problem is, we are out of power now and so I can't turn my pump on. Power isn't expected to be back until Thursday. I brushed my pool today. I have been adding CalHypo for shock because I don't have access to all that liquid chlorine, it takes up space, it's heavy and impractical for my pool right now. My calcium prior to the hurricane was on the low side at 225. Now for my questions.
How often should I shock?
How long is acceptable to go without shocking?
How long can the pool go on like this without a pump?
Do I need to worry about pH, because it won't be accurate with all that chlorine?
Will the alkalinity be accurate with shocking?
Should I be doing anything other than adding chlorine and brushing and netting?

Just manually add chlorine and mix it in via the pool brush as best you can. If you can borrow a small generator for an hour then you can drop in a submersible pump and let it do the mixing. You should make it till Thursday and then you may need to slam.

Glad you are safe.
You should add enough chlorine to keep the FC at or above target level for your CYA.
I would suggest you test and add every day if at all possible.
Pool can go as long as is necessary. It will cloud up. But if you keep the FC up, you likely will not get algae.
Do not worry about pH or TA right now. Deal with that when things normalize.

Okay, I'm going to have to be gone for a week starting Monday. Since I have added shock, my chlorine is off the charts I'm sure. I haven't tested because I figured with all that debris that was in the pool initially I just needed to get it out and super chlorinate the water. My pool is 16,300gal. Can I add a bag of shock a day? It says it treats 10,000 gallons. I ask this because I'm going to have to lean on someone to add something to the pool every day when I'm gone. I could divide it up and weigh it to add less, maybe 1/2 a bag a day?? I can't expect someone to brush my pool everyday, I want to keep my friends. Pool company never came, and if they do it will probably screw things up anyway because they might try to add Crud I don't want in my pool- and then it's just one day. I'm in a pickle here.

Be very careful adding solid chlorine (I assume it is Cal Hypo) to the pool and not brushing. That product can easily settle on your pool surface and you will have stains and / or calcium deposits.
Always use all of that product once you open the container (bag). It is very dangerous to store.

If you must be away and no one can actively manage the pool, then use floating dispenser and load with pucks. Deal with the mess when you get home.

Perfect, I will do that. Thank you for letting me know about the staining. Good thing I have been brushing my pool.
:) I have been so focused on maintaining my pool the TFP way that I forgot there is a such thing as those floaty thingys. :ROFLMAO: Thank you!
