Greetings, Did a search on this but came up short. Looking for opinions/experience on running Pro Logic PS8 with variable speed pump on a portable generator. Specifically looking to determine if I need an inverter generator or will a non-inverter generator work without damaging the controller.

A few weeks ago Debby passed through and we received 16" of rain in a 3-4 day period. Some folks are saying just load the pool with chlorine and turn the pump off. Not concerned with that as I can always fix the water later. My big concern was the pool overflowing. Not sure what damage might occur if it went over, but I'd like to avoid finding out. Luckily we did not lose power and I had to pump the pool out to the lower back yard. I was pumping about 3-6 hours per day just to keep it from overflowing and at one point the pump was just barely keeping up with the rainfall. I can only pump through a 3/4" garden hose through a hose bib attached to the output side of the pump.

Having an electrician install a 50A input and interlock switch for a generator so I can pick and chose what circuits I want to power. Anyone have any experience with a non-inverter generator running this controller/pump setup? Did it damage your controller?

For what it's worth, I run most of my house, including my Calimar variable speed pump, off a non-inverter Westinghouse Wgen9500df generator converted to run on natural gas. Longest run was four days after the derecho that hit the Houston area this past May.

Pool pump and other electronics/appliances run just fine on "dirty" generator power, besides some cheap LED bulbs flickering. I think the whole "clean power" concern is a bit overblown, at least for short term / backup power applications.

On the other hand - some of my neighbors were without power for a week after Hurricane Beryl in July, and they managed to keep their pools in decent shape by manually scooping, brushing, and adding chlorine.

Pump won't care if it's inverter generator or not.....
And the pool won't care if you circulate daily liquid chlorine doses with a pool pump or a submersible pump if the need ever arises. (y)

It might get a little dirty with the filter not working, but it won't be dirty and also a swamp.

Check out the 1.6 HP pumps on amazon. ($83) With the 1.5 inch hose it's almost 5000 GPH.
