pooldv texas pool thread

Re: pooldv pool thread

LOL!! I used to agree with that. We are very warm bodied. Our solar is set to turn off at 93 and we consider 88-92 to be the sweet spot. But, we figured out last spring that like 78-82 degree air temps, sunny, low wind and as long as the water is slightly warmer than the air temp it is ok. Before that we would never get in the water below 85.

Now that's what we are talking about. We also consider 88-92 the sweet spot. We like 92 degrees if the air is cooler and 88 deg in the summertime. We do a lot of nighttime swimming. We will probably officially open the pool in a couple of weeks when I come back from out of the country.

Re: pooldv pool thread

Great news and that sounds good for the ankle, mate! The fridge that is. Oh yeh, the swimming too. So does it seem earlier than before the heating upgrade? Weeks, months?

Re: pooldv pool thread

LOL!! That didn't happen! There is no photographic evidence of that anywhere! :)

Yes, the heat pump absolutely made a difference to swimming. It gave us the entire month of October last year and at least a month sooner this year. There have been past years where we were barely warm enough to swim memorial day weekend. Mid-april is probably the norm. Swimming March 18-19 is definitely a record breaker for us.

Re: pooldv pool thread

Thanks for the tip on the freeze proof hose bibs. I have them as well but do not disconnect the hoses. Front bib is connected to a hose that runs underground and up to the front porch. It's disconnected there. Back bib is connected to a hose reel with the nozzle removed. I thought this was enough but it makes sense that it is not enough.

I'll have to check them both before I turn the water back on.

Thanks again!

Re: pooldv pool thread

I think that as long as the hose can drain then it is ok to leave it connected. This one has a hose that ends up a little above the elevation of the faucet. I had another one on the north side of the house that still had the hose connected that did fine. But, that hose was able to drain. But, better safe than out 35 bucks and a trip to the store! It takes a lot less time to disconnect the hose. :)

Re: pooldv pool thread

Here is what a heat pump, solar cover and 240sf of solar panels can do for you in March.
Early to mid-march the pool was 70-72, solar was on, solar cover was on, air temps were in the upper 60s to mid 70s with lows in the 40s and 50s, occasional 30s.

3/16/17 72 Heat pump on
3/17/17 77 Heat pump on
3/18/17 83 Heat pump on
3/19/17 85 Heat pump on
3/20/17 87 Heat pump turned off in am, 83 sunny
3/21/17 89 lo 60, hi 83, sunny, no HP
3/22/17 91 lo 61, hi 76, cloudy, no HP
3/23/17 88 lo 63, hi 83, sunny, No HP

Pump runs 8a to 10p at 1100 rpm
Solar is on
Solar cover is on 24x7

Once the pool is heated up (water, gunite, ground, whatever) it is fairly easy to maintain it.

I really like that natural setting. To steal a line from Florida, The Real Texas.
