Pool Water Testing

It is best to raise your FC with liquid chlorine then test after 30 minutes to confirm.
Can you source liquid chlorine no additives and do you know how many gallons of water are in your pool?

Pool is 24k gallons and I’ve never purchased liquid chlorine. I have always used my chlorinator to generate the chlorine I needed.

I’m sure I can buy it somewhere close. Think a gallon jug would do the trick?

Bleach comes in different concentrations 6%, 10% and 12.5% are common.
First source some liquid chlorine no additives you will need 2 gallons of 10% or 12.5%. If you get 6% you will need three gallons. Second, test your water for FC this afternoon then as the sun is setting add enough liquid chlorine to target anywhere between 5-7ppm then test FC again to confirm.
Use Pool Math to estimate your liquid chlorine amounts needed, PoolMath

To raise your (24,000 gals) pool just 1ppm FC will take the following amount of liquid chlorine depending on the concentration you have sourced:

6% = 50oz
10% = 31oz
12.5% = 25oz

Double check my math, raise your FC, confirm your FC at sundown then shut down your SWCG and follow the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test in detail.

For FC you can use a 10ml sample, and one heaping scoop of powder. Each drop is 0.5ppm. That’s precise enough for us. :)

How does your pool look?
I did this for my FC sample today have finished with 3.5.

I’m going this afternoon to buy some liquid chlorine and going to hopefully to a test tonight.

Thanks @Oly!

I picked up a couple of gallons today and dumped one in right at dark and unplugged my SWCG.

I tested it about 40 minutes after and it took 18 drops to go clear at the 0.5 measure so it should put me right at 9ppm.

I’ll report back in the morning with what I find. What would y’all recommend me keeping my CYA?

Thanks! I believe I saw that yesterday but not sure. I’ve read a ton of info from everyone the last few days.

Is there a way to calculate how many lbs of stabilizer I need to add? I believe I’m right at 30 with my test yesterday. Need to bring it up to 70 based off of your info.

Yeah! Do you have pool math? PoolMath It is a smartphone app.

Download and setup your pool. Then add a log for your current test results. Then from the home screen click CYA. Input your target and it will tell you how much to add.

You will need to gear up for the SLAM Process
Don't add any more CYA now until you complete the SLAM process.
The closer you follow the process the faster it will be over.
Source more liquid chlorine, test and get your pH into the low 7s and keep your FC up until you start.

Ok. I’ll be out of town this week and early next week so I may wait till middle of next week to give this a go.

Do I use my swg while I’m adding liquid chlorine to slam it?

Keep your SWCG running while gone and until ready to SLAM.

Be sure to read this carefully SLAM Process and follow it in detail.

If you have a salt water chlorine generator, chlorine tablet dispenser, injection pump, or Liquidator, you will still need to use another chlorine source for SLAMing. All of these devices are designed to add chlorine slowly and steadily over many hours. To kill algae or lower CC, you need to put in lots of chlorine all at once.

The best solution to this is simply shut off the SWCG and use liquid chlorine only for the duration of the SLAM

That's really hard to say. Some people get by with a handful, some people need a TON of it. Since you have no CCs, are mostly clear (maybe a tad hazy), and just barely not passing the OCLT test, your SLAM could go quick. How big is your pool? It will help if you could fill out your signature (see mine as an example - if you're on a mobile device you'll need to turn your device sideways to see signatures).

So not much bigger than mine - one gallon of 12.5% for me raises by about 6ppm. For you it'll be closer to 5ppm. Not sure on your current CYA value but if 30 it will need to get up to 12ppm, so depending on your starting FC, it'll be a couple of gallons to kick it off. At that elevated FC level you could lose enough to add a gallon or two in a day.

So I'd start off with about 6-8 gallons planning on that lasting me hopefully the week, but knowing I may need to get more if I end up burning through it unexpectedly. Hopefully it's a quick SLAM. I think for you being careful to find anywhere the algae might be hiding is going to be the biggest key. You might find a little colony somewhere behind a light, in a ladder, in a skimmer throat or weir door foam, etc. that is throwing off your OCLT.
