My pool contractor said I have the choice of pool cleaners. He gave me either the 'Rebel' by Pentair or 'The Pool Cleaner' aka Pool Vernugen. Which one is better?

Your pool builder is living way in the past.. Both of those cleaners are Suction side cleaners...
I suggest that you move up into this Century and buy your own Robot cleaner.. Like this one...

Tell him you want a robot and not a suction side cleaner... 
I had the 'The Pool Cleaner' aka Pool Vernugen and it was great at picking up stuff on the bottom.. I now have a Active 60 that scrubs my pool and cleans 100% better than before and it uses WAY less power doing it.. costs me 20 cents to clean the pool spotless for 2 hours

I use the Poolvergnuegen 4-Wheel Pool Cleaner. As mentioned, it does what it's supposed to do; pick up dirt/debris off the bottom of the pool. If it means anything, I've used it for over 5-years and have not had to do any maintenance or repairs to the cleaner and the hose is still in good shape. If/when it dies, I may consider a robot, but for now it gets the job done.
