Pool Store Question

Depending on the CYA level, 3ppm may very well be too low and will not prevent an algae outbreak. Algae outbreaks are just the crack in the door for a pool store to sell you algaecides, Phosphate reducers, and other such chemicals that you either 1) don't need, 2) can get cheaper elsewhere (though can be convinced that being at the pool store outweighs the inconvenience of getting what you need on the way home.).

Two reasons: 1. If the FC is 3 and cya typically higher on a puck diet, you likely NEED to "shock" just to semi-sanitize, or come closer to sanitizing the water once a week ;) 2. Sales.

I'm not saying it is premeditated per se. I'm just saying when you start with a faulty premise, everything else is off kilter.

The faulty premise of the pool industry and retailers is that homeowners will not do right by their pools...they won't test and read cya, they won't use liquid instead of pucks, they must be protected from knowledge for both convenience...and profit ;)

Simple, a pool store is in business to make money. Their method of keeping a pool safe to swim in will be a nice little profit for them. I could go on and on but there are many threads that you can use the search feature of this website to find answers on this subject.

they say it because that is what they are told to say. That's what their mentors said, that is what the chemical companies say, so that is what they tell you.

Judging by all the trouble people have keeping their pools clean with that method it clearly is sound advice
