Did you turn it upsidedown to purge all the air out of it? If it still floats and isn't supposed to, consider returning it and getting one that better suits your needs.

We decided to try tying our thermometer to our robot's handle. I now have proof the water way down at the floor is quite a bit cooler than the top half.
