Pool resurfacing

I opened my pool this year and it is official: I need to replace the vinyl liner. It's 17 years old. I've heard that replacing the vinyl liner is not recommended. So I've got a message into Advance Pool Coatings in Loomis, CA regarding fiberglass resurfacing. Any ideas or suggestions about proceeding from here? I have absolutely no clue as to other options. We live in a remote area without any pool services. So we've learned on our own how to fix the pump, etc. Thanks!

Why is replacing the vinyl liner not recommended? We have lots of folks here who replace their liner. Some even install it themselves.

There is only one place that I could find in my area that does any sort of vinyl manufacturing. In fact, this was the place that manufactured the original liner in my pool. I called them and they said they no longer make liners and they recommend using alternative surfacing. They referred me to a resurfacing company which does gunnite and fiberglass.

You can get a liner replaced for around $5,000. Resurfacing with fiberglass will cost $10,000 - $15,000. Gunite will likely be over $20,000.

Keep looking for a liner replacement company - there should be someone in Redding, Chico, or Reno, or even Sacramento that will do this for you..
