Pool renovation leak detection

Hi everyone.

I am in the middle of a pool renovation, equipment changeout, piping replacement, liner etc. I am getting ready to close for the winter and pick up next spring and I have water in the trench next to my pool steps. I think I have a leak. I was in the pool all day yesterday in a wet suit with leak detection dye. I can’t find anything. Any other way to find a leak. Could it be ground water. The trench is about 4 feet deep. I am about two blocks from the bay. Any suggestions would help.

Test the water in the trench for CYA. If it has CYA equal to your pool water then it confirms the water came from your pool.

Do you have a K-2006C or TF100 test kit?

Or test for salt level if you have a K-1766 Salt test Kit.

I haven’t put any chemicals in it yet this year as the liner was just changed out. I am going to go to the store and pick up salt and put in the pool. I am going to pump the water out of the hole and then wait a couple of days and test both waters for sale. This was a good idea I didn’t think of. Thanks!

Is your pump running to dissolve salt or stabilizer?

I think putting 30 ppm of stabilizer/CYA in the water is easier and less expensive then 2000 ppm of salt.

Yes. My pump is running as I was renovating my whole pool. So I added the salt and unfortunately a couple days later the water is testing with salt in it. I was going to backfill and winterize this weekend but I am just going to hold off on backfilling around the step. I will deal with it next season.

I was in the pool this weekend on a wetsuit, snorkel and leak detection dye and I could find anything.

Any ideas now that I have confirmed that it is leaking? Checked all the screws and seals around the step.
