I currently have a single speed whisperflo and going to replace with variable speed whisperflo. It’s a drop in replacement. As you can see in pictures, it has 2 unions but not directly next to pump. I can unscrew unions, unscrew pipes directly in old pump, re tape plumbers tape and screw into new pump. There are currently no leaks on existing pump connections there. Or should I buy 2 high temp unions and re-plump? The 2nd options seems more work but not sure recommendation. Thanks

I would unscrew the unions, unscrew the pipes, retape and reconstruct. If it doesn't work, then you can re-plumb.
Ditto to this. Those are CPVC pipe adapters, very good items. Just be sure to not thread them all the way into the new pump after adding about 5 or 6 tight wraps of Teflon tape and a little silicone sealant over that.
