Unless the wiring was changed, I can't think of an electrical issue that would cause that.

Do you know exactly where the motor was smoking?
Was the body of the motor hot to the touch?
However, if it is under warranty, your best option is to get a new one.

That sounds like the windings are overheating although I would have expect the thermal limiter to switch the motor off. At this point you are better off getting a replacement.
