The VS pump you got is chock full of sensitive electronics...more so than simpler 1 or 2 speed motors. It is a VERY GOOD idea to have a surge protector in general on your home or more specifically on the breaker feeding your brand new fancy schmancy sweet variable speed highly flexible pump.

VS pumps use a microchip controlled variable frequency drive to change the motor speed to whatever you want. Those drives are susceptible to voltage spikes just like your computer or TV. A SS motor had no drive and therefore is not.

Well that makes lots of sense to me. So the next obvious questions.... which one to get? how much should it cost? and how hard is it to install?

I don't have a vs yet, I had asked on another thread about them and there it was recommended for protection of the investment.

The Intermatic PS3000 would work. it's about $ 70 on amazon.
