22,000 gal pool, Hayward cartridge filter, new vinyl liner, running filter 24/7, Ohio. Pool water is crystal clear, chemicals are all balanced. The only thing that is low is water hardness but I’ve been told that is not causing the issue. Every few days I will see green spot on the sides. I add 2 bags of super shock, brush the entire pool, exchange the filters and soak in super shock, add algecide. We’re good for a couple of days and then spots again. Follow the same procedure again and we’re good for a few days and spots again. I’ve been doing this since I opened the pool. The pool stores test my chemicals and are also at a loss. Thought the algae might be hiding somewhere that I missed. Took the ladder out and scrubbed every inch. Continue to have the same problem. After shocking and cleaning and vacuuming and doing all of this when I take my filter out to change it it always seems to have a green tinge. Soak and exchange and still happens. Where is this ages hiding?

Hey Sadie and Welcome !!

You need reliable home testing. Pool stores bring us the bulk of our new members. Your results are par for the course there.

Test Kits Compared

With said reliable test kit, you need to SLAM Process to remove the algae. It's microscopic and by the time you see any, it's way too late.

Welcome to TFP!

Please follow the suggestions above, my question is nothing but a follow up to those. The ability to properly test your water is step one to any corrective actions.

So my question is if you can get a picture of your filter with the green tinge? If that's not possible, can you describe it? Like, forest green, lime green, aqua green?

Generally, we're suspicious of pool-store testing - but if you have them, what were the latest results ?

Typically if you are seeing algae, your FC/CYA ratio is off. This is why we recommend testing yourself, so you get accurate timely numbers that you can work with.

The 'Green - shock - good - green' cycle is usually indicative of very high CYA. The boost of FC from the shock temporarily kills the visible algae, but once that is used up, the residual isn't enough given the CYA level to effectively sanitize. This is generally when you get sold an algaecide, a flocculant, phosphate sponge, or some other miracle solution that also doesn't work ;)
