Pool is a swamp, need to close urgently

Please help! Unfortunately we fell on some difficult times financially last year and were not able to maintain our pool. We have a safety cover but didn't close it. The result, a swamp. I've attached photos of what's coming off the bottom, the unknown bugs living in that mess, and our nightmare pool.

We are NOT in a better financial situation but desperately need to close the pool ASAP!

We were just going to cover it as is, but everything I've read says it will cause more damage and money in the long run and could smell god awful if covered in this condition. Not- it currently does NOT smell but has tons of bugs. We have no use for the pool for at least the next year but hope to use it again next summer. It is a liner pool btw.

Do we clean it up as best we can before covering it? Or do we just cover it and deal with it later? If we just cover it, are the bugs inside now going to die and smell and cause a bigger issue?

I know we are pretty clueless on pool ownership and clearly made mistakes. We appreciate any advice though, please without judgement. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to TFP.

I vote to just put the cover on the pool and come back to the pool whenever you have the means to deal with it.

I don't think covering it as is will cause any more damage then what is already there.

I doubt if it will small and if it does then you can uncover it and deal with it.
