Pool Install - underlay (carpet) got wet

Hi all!

So in the process of installing my 21’ above ground pool, weather was cooperating. I installed one of those carpet underlays and plan on doing 3/4” rigid insulation as well. However once we got the wall up, the weather didn’t want to cooperate and it started raining and the underlay/carpet at this point is wet.

Question is, do I wait for the carpet to dry out now or can I proceed with installing the rigid foam insulation over it and continue with the liner. Part of me says let it dry.. but the forecast is looking like rain for the next 5 days 🤦‍♂️

What’s your guys thoughts?

Just following along with my morning coffee and do NOT have an AGP but found this online (AI).

  • To minimize the risk of wet underlay, consider:
    • Moisture-resistant materials: Opt for underlay materials specifically designed to resist moisture.

    • Moisture barriers: Use underlays with built-in moisture barriers or install a separate moisture barrier layer under the carpet.

    • Prompt drying: If the underlay does get wet, take steps to dry it thoroughly.
  • Considerations for Pool Areas:
Pool areas are prone to moisture, so it's crucial to choose an underlay that can withstand the potential exposure to water.

Carpet under the pool is a bad idea. It WILL get wet due to rain over time. The dirt/grass will soak in the rain water and it will migrate to the carpet. It will start rotting and make a mess over time. You are much better off with the foam board being your only think under the pool.

Let me clarify - it’s not just household carpet lol. It’s that greyish felt that comes part of the pool, oval in shape. See photo - maybe I’m using the wrong term to describe it

So you are saying it came with the pool kit? Does it absorb water?
Yes it came with the pool. It’s a felt like material. Like this here but don’t know the actual thickness of it - it’s fairly thin.

Then your plan is a good one. That is called under pad for a pool bottom.

Do you have any foam cove? This is to keep the liner inside the walls and dirt out.

As in wait for it to dry before installing over this under pad?

Yes I do have the cove pieces- not pictured as it’s not installed due to weather. Next step is 3/4” rigid foam insulation over that underpad, then the coving around the perimeter of pool then liner. Just need sun! 😂

Are you sure the pad doesn’t go on top of the foam?

The foam is completely optional. Some just install this pad and call it good, I’m adding the foam for extra softness on the feet and insulation value whatever it may provide
Seems like the pad would help isolate any movement from the foam boards over time so you don’t see the joints through the liner from inside the pool.

Just FYI: The foam won’t provide any insulation value under the floor. Will help prevent liner rips from rocks though.
