Looking to add a heat pump to my pool and since Raypak seems to be a recommended brand on this site I was wondering if Raypak Standard 133K BTU Digital Heat Pump R8350TI-E would be a good fit for my pool. Raypak Standard 133K BTU Digital Heat Pump - 013331 - INYOPools.com
I will likely be installing this myself and realize that I will lose some warranty protection by doing this. Should I be concerned?
I am also open to other brands/models.

I'd like to start off by saying, WELCOME TO TFP!!

I'm located in Eastern Ohio so it's likely our temps are very much the same. The Heat Pump you're looking at is the same one we currently use and LOVE. When the temps are in the Mid 70's it's able to heat our 24k gallon pool about 1/2 a degree per hour. This is the norm in Early May or late September. We'll kick it on during these months and enjoy 84° water when normally the pool is too cold to swim. This doesn't break the bank either. It's the norm that we see maybe an increase of $150 during these months to heat the pool. Now during the hotter summer months when the air temps hit 90° it's common to see about 1.5° increase per hour coming from the heat pump. We'll kick the temps up around 88° during this time and enjoy. During these warm monthes we may see an increase of $75-$100 to heat the pool to this very warm temp.

Regardless what you decide, invest in a good cover and reel. The more you can keep the heat in, the better!! A good cover will pay for itself several times over if used frequently.

I have an older model RayPak heat pump on my pool, the RHP100.

It was a good product when it worked, but now after 6 or 7 years the refrigerant leaked out. But what really bothers me is that the housing is rusting apart. Of course this equipment sits outside, but my home's AC unit (a heat pump) also sits outside and shows no signs of rust after 15 years.

However I'm now purchasing a propane spa heater (from INYO pools) and I'm going with the RayPak brand -so I still have confidence in the brand.

Refrigerant is a maintenance item that should be checked and topped up annually. A pool heat pump is the same as a home heat pump, they should be cleaned and inspected annually. For some reason lots of folks don't seem to have their pool heat pumps checked when they have their home HVAC equipment checked. Your HVAC contractor should be able to add it to your current maintenance agreement.

On the rusting, any chance you store muriatic acid nearby? Muriatic acid fumes will accelerate rusting of all things metal. MA should be stored outside away from metal in a shady, well ventilated area.
