Pool filter balls

I was amazed to find that they still make the same model pump, so that is a consideration. My wife and I decided that considering the time of year we aren't going to rush into a decision on the pump replacement. We don't heat the pool, so It'll be too cold to swim in in a few weeks to a month. I'm still looking for a variable speed that I can fit into the current system.

I know it's been a while, but unfortunately a family issue put a pause on my pump issue. We decided to stay with the same model pump we had before. The pump can be used at 120V or 240V. My previous pump was set up at 240. Obviously, the easy thing would be to set this one up the same way. I'm curious as to which voltage is best for the pool. Having no experience with 120V pumps, I've got the time to hear what other folks do.

It would be advisable to just hook it up with the 240v. As far as electricity it'll use the same amount the difference between 110 and 240 is if you're going to pull all the amperage on one leg of the panel or two. The two leg option is advisable as it keeps the hot legs even, splitting the amperage evenly and not overloading one side if your nearing the limit on the panel, also leaving room for other electrical instalations down the road.

What water was left after draining was dark olive green. The balls themselves ranged from almost as white as they went in at the top of the filter to dark green at the bottom. Interestingly, I found a piece of somnething that I don't recognize as a pool part in the sludge. I'm attaching a couple of pics of the balls to give you an idea of what they came out like. Plus a pic of the part I found. It looks very familiar, but I can't put my finger on what it could have came from. It's not from anything in the filter. I went through all the parts inside and everything looks good.
That piece you found in your hayward filter looks like a piece of the lateral ball end maybe? Not sure but I just installed mine and when you put that long white plastic pipe in with the black finger like extensions, I believe that is a piece of one of those fingers. Sorry I do not have the pool lingo yet since I just installed my first pool. Hopefully my balls work unlike yours.... lol
