Pool cloudy, mostly in deep end

again.. just keep it at a shock level? willl the shock level take care of the cloudiness eventually?

or will i have to shut off the pump at some point to let stuff sink.

believe it or not, it was very green all over before. so what you're seeing is "better" than it was on Monday etc..

Still would be good to see some numbers if we could. I understand you're keeping your FC high (over 12 - 15), but that's not the same as saying something like:

6/11 8:30 PM
FC - 12
CC - 4
pH - 7.5

I'm personally interested in seeing what your combined chlorine numbers look like (but if the moderators aren't worried about it, I'm about the last one you need to humor.)

Keep it up. You're making progress and you won't believe how much better it looks and how much easier it is to maintain after you're done (and PLEASE don't stop til you're done!!!)

As to the puff from the sand filter, 1 - 2 minutes of backwashing doesn't really seem long enough to me. I like to shoot for 3 - 5 and then rinse for 1 - 2 minutes. Try a longer backwash/rinse cycle next time you have to do it and see what happens when you switch back to filter.

ill try to get it tested by a pool store tomorrow. (without buying $180 worth of thier Crud)

i saw other posts on here go from green to cloudy to clear.

I'm now cloudy in the shallow end and cloudy with a hint of green in the deep end. If I just keep scrubbing and shocking, will that get me to clear ? or will there be a change in the process as I begin to fight just the cloudiness?

i saw other posts on here go from green to cloudy to clear. That's examples of the process.

YES!! :-D or will there be a change in the process as I begin to fight just the cloudiness? It may change colors a bit more off and on. But if you hit it hard and regular this weekend, you'll see soooooo much difference by days end Sunday.

Matty-
Let me tell you another thing about my experience today at the other pool that was clear, and never got the least bit cloudy with 12 kids in it...

I watched my daughter's hair turn green over the course of the afternoon. I scrubbed that kid's hair 3x with clarifying shampoo this evening (and was quite annoyed at it...)

You will get there. I swear. And it will be the most amazing thing. Remember when you said you never expect to have sparkling water like you see here..Expect it. It WILL happen. But you just have to keep at it.

got ya. like i said. I'm baffled that chlorine alone will turn it clear. kill algae? i believe it. but clear it? can't wait to see!
Mine was hazy, heck I had lots of green goo that came through the safety cover over the winter. I increased CYA, hit it with bleach, scrubbed, back washed, more bleach, a little bit of muratic, more bleach, running the polaris to keep the grey algae (dead stuff) suspended, bleach, etc... It took about a week. The water was still hazy when I went to bed and was crystal clear when I got up... It does happen!

Bleach kills the algae and the filter system clears it up... Sand filters just take longer since the don't filter as small.

Hang in there!

hanging.

I'm heck bent on having this fixed. My wife is 7 months pregnant so I'd like to have her enjoy the pool (takes pressure off her bones, joints, muscles) during the last few months of the pregnancy. So I really want to get this done, even if it means giving my whole weekend to the pool.

I was 7 months pregnant in August of the year I had my daughter. August in S. Indiana is about like Florida in the same months...MISERABLE...and compounded 10fold being pregnant....
What I wouldn't have given to be cool those last two months...we didn't have a pool then so LOTS of ice cream and 3 fans and the AC at 68 had to do the job...one weekend of intense attention to that pool will give her weeks of comfort...and she will be forever grateful.

Congratulations!!!
That's even more of a reason to hang in there!

update. tested the chlorine, still high. applied more

more importantly, the pool now has rid itself of the green tint. it is now just cloudy and blueish. It got a little less blue when i brushed it this morning, but still waking up to blue cloudy is better than green cloudy.

Just keep chugging along believe me by week 6 I wanted to pull mine and everyone elses hair out but instead I took it out on the pool, with bleach alone my pool is sparkling like a charm. Just keep. brushing vacuuming testing shocking...repeat. Don't let the chlorine get low because if all of the algae isn't dead it will regrow faster than you can kill it if your chlorine gets down. Keep it up you'll be swimming before you know it.

KEEP IT UP! :goodjob:

All day today. Shock. Test. Wait. Repeat. ALL DAY!!!! Wait until you see it tomorrow!

Yes, chlorine clears the pool. Many times, cloudiness is due to organic compounds. After all, leaves and bugs and pollen and people  add organics to the pool water. Chlorine oxidizes the organics. If the organic happens to be an ammonia compound, the chlorine will combine with the ammonia to form chloramine (a.k.a. CC - which can also cloud the water). Raise chlorine to shock levels, you get high oxidation rates and CC also gets reduced. Therefore, the things making the water cloudy are removed by shocking, leaving you with a sparkly, cool oasis for that 7 month pregnant better half of yours.

tried backwashing longer and rinsing, still saw about 10 seconds of debri (light brown) come in after turning the filter back to 'filter' mode. i'm not sure the cause here. I won't sweat it too much until I get this pool closer to clear.

aside from that, i have been keeping up on the bleach and its a cloudy blue color. so i'm hoping its still in the right direction.

update:

this morning the whole pool looks blue. the deep end is cloudy still, but the shallow end is even less cloudy than yesterday. so i would consider this morning a win. also, my chlorine loss overnight was minimal at worst. so I'm just going to keep monitoring it and stirring it around. maybe the clear pool arrives monday?

Improving! :goodjob:

You are done shocking when you meet this three criteria:

A. CC is 0.5 or lower;
B. An overnight FC loss test shows a loss of 1.0 ppm or less;
C. And, if you don't have a FAS-DPD test kit, the water is clear.

Hopefully it will not be long now, but make sure you complete the shock process. :)

i need to have the cc and fc tested(i can only test total chlorine). but what i can tell you is that my total chlorine level hasn't dropped from last night, or if it did, it barely did. This wasnt the case a few days ago. So the chlorine in there is holding. Deep end still cloudy, but very blue. i would say there has been progress daily for the last 3 days. looks nice today, but like i said, not crystal clear yet..
