Pool build in Houston

HOUSTON
I am building a new house in Houston and submitting permits to the city for the pool on my side yard (there is no backyard; corner lot). I would highly appreciate anyone's thoughts/advice. I am using a pool company that has built a ton of pools and chose to keep the pool very simple (no features) since I don't have a huge yard. (I hope don't regret not doing a waterfall or scuppers). The pool will be surrounded by a 8 foot white brick wall/fence on one side. There are no trees nearby so I don't think very much stuff should get blown into the pool.

I am currently planning to do silver tumbled travertine pavers all around the pool (I like the white marble tumbled pavers but I am worried keeping them clean will be too difficult).

Can you tell us what size/type of pump (HP, speed, etc) and size filter (Sq ft capacity)? Also, you won't hear much positive comments for the ozone for an outdoor pool as the TX sun should provide all the oxidation you need. Remember an in-line chlorinator (tabs/pucks) is only for intermittent use and not recommended for continued use. That means you'll be adding chlorine (bleach) manually each day. Nothing wrong with that at all, just want to make sure you know. If automated chlorination is something you want, you should inquire about a salt water generator (SWG) or liquid dispensing system (i.e. Stenner pump). Hope that helps.

Thanks for catching that. I am not doing the ozone generator. I know it is a dual stage pump but I will get the other details. My current pool i have pucks in all the time and just shock it every week or two...guess I have been doing that wrong?

If I get one of those systems you are talking about, I would not have to add chemicals myself (or not as much)? Does that make it a salt water pool?

ha ha. If you ask us ... yes. :) Continuous use of chlorine tabs/pucks increase CYA (stabilizer) to the point the pool often times needs to be drained or have a significant water exchange. Especially in our hot areas with lots of FC requirements and evaporation. My tab feeder has been empty for over 2 years since coming to TFP. I go to HEB or Wal-Mart and grab their regular/plain bleach for about $2.94 per gallon. Works perfectly with no side effects. Save the tabs for when you're away from home or something, but not everyday use. For my size pool, I add about 1/2 gallon each day. If adding bleach manually is an issue, then the SWG or chlorine pump can be installed. The SWG works off of salt added to the water and converts the salt to free chlorine, then the salt remains to be continuously used.

It's a personal choice for most. An SWG can always be added later if you're unsure. Feel free to review/bookmark the vital links you see below in my signature. At some point, you'll need to update your signature as well.
