Here is what one kind of venturi might look like. As water travels through the nozzle, it creates low pressure that draws in air. The problem can be that if the air pipe is full of water (no Hartford loop), the venturi may not have enough suction to clear the air pipe so a blower is used to help with that. Generally a venturi can clear a few ft of water in the air pipe but too much and a blower is necessary.
