A pool company hired to resurface my pool placed fresh red clay to fill in a muddy area in front of steps then used 3 yards of cement pool mix to resurface pool . The next day the area in front of steps was wet still so they put hydrolic cement over the area and put in a Tara vynal pool liner. Only allowing 1 day for cement to cure. And placed liner immediately over the hydrolic cement. 17 days later I reported to them the pool was leaking. I hired a leak detection company who determined the liner pulled away from steps in front of where the hydrolic cement was placed. Google says to wait 28 days before placing vynal liner over fresh cement to cure properly so liner doesn't shrink. The liner has definitely shrunk. Can someone please help me locate written proof regarding how long cement should cure before placing a vynal liner on it. I have contacted both the cement company and Tara manufacturer who would not supply this information. Thank you for your help.

Hydraulic cement cures within an hour. why the vinyl liner would leak if the concrete under the hydraulic cement was not cured I don’t know but maybe someone else does.

Curing concrete generates heat that can damage a liner.

Only allowing 1 day for cement to cure.

That is plenty of time.

Most likely the liner was too small or it shifted and pulled away from the steps.

Vermiculite.

Vermiculite is a lightweight mineral.

Mixed with Portland cement, it forms a semi-hard surface that feels slightly spongy underfoot.

Many of the arguments against vermiculite are same reasons some builders favor the material.

Because it is porous, it won’t trap water between the floor and liner.

The liner may float, but it will recede in time.

As with concrete, crews should make the vermiculite layer between 1 and 2 inches thick.

Any thicker and it will void the porosity, which would defeat its purpose.

Fans of this material also claim that it’s easier on the liner.

Vinyl expands and contracts with the temperature.

The constant shifting back and forth on a rough concrete floor would, they say, reduce the liner’s lifespan.

And because vermiculite takes longer to set, you can be more meticulous.

Any imperfections can be addressed later.

It can take one to two days for it to cure.

Like concrete it continues to cure but should be pretty firm in 24 hours.

A day works. Two at most. Its a concrete product but it never really gets that strong so its better to get the liner on and water in to protect it.

Next day is fine it dries fast. For rough areas you can skim with dry Portland and trowel smooth. the ground moisture will bind them later.

A vermiculite bottom sets up completely in three to five days. Although in some instances liners can be installed almost immediately after troweling, pool owners should be cautioned about using the pool until curing is complete.

The vinyl liner may be installed immediately upon completion of the Pool-Krete® hard bottom; however, it is recommended that there by no traffic in the pool until the Pool-Krete® has had sufficient opportunity to harden.

This period will normally be two days depending upon temperature.

Traffic in the pool prior to sufficient hardening will result in unsightly indentations which serve as collection points for dirt and potential algae.

The pool, however, may be filled immediately after liner installation.
