Pool water was perfect May and June. Then became dingy in July and now cloudy. Cannot see bottom in deep end.
I have taken several test samples to local pool store. Here are my most recent results attached. Phosphates have come down from 4000 after 3 doses of Phosfree.

Chlorine is disappearing 4 or 5 days after shock using granular chlorine. I think that my CYA is high.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I think that my next step will be taking water out of pool and adding fresh to lower CYA???

Thanks....

Welcome Don!

Step one is to get a Taylor K-2006 test kit from either Amazon.ca or if you're lucky a local pool supplier will have one, though it's pretty rare up here in Canada.

Other more experienced members will no doubt be along to give you more advice, but you need to help yourself first by not getting your water tested at the pool store anymore.

Thanks. I have a buddy in my community who put me onto this site and he no longer uses pool stores. Not sure which testing kit he has but he will get me the details. Hopefully he can train me to use his resources. I have had my pool for over 30 years with not many issues. yikes! Any experience with hi phosphate levels??

We do not give advice based on pool store or pool service testing. We have found that pool owner testing with a proper test kit is the only reliable testing.

Here is a link to the test kits recomended:

Until you get your test kit, it is recommended that you use "poolmath" to determine the correct dose of liquid chlorine (Walmart, "Pool Essentials") to add 5ppm of chlorine to your pool every day. Once you have the test kit and complete the testing, post your results and we should be able to help you.

What you are experiencing, good pool water for 2-3 months then the water turns dingy and possibly some algae, is typical of the use of trichlor pucks and or dichlor powders, these contain both chlorine and stabilizer (CYA). If the CYA level in the pool gets too high, it is difficult to get enough chlorine in the pool to keep the water sanitary (CYA attaches to a portion of the chlorine to protect all the chlorine from UV light, to determine the amount of chlorine that the CYA has bound to is tanke the ppm of CYA x .075= amount of chlorine not available to sanitize the pool, you need 2-3ppm above this number to sanitize the pool)

While you are waiting for the test kit to arrive, you can begin your education into pool management, in Pool Care Basics

Any experience with hi phosphate levels??
I've never tested for, or concerned myself with phosphate levels.

Your biggest concern, if your water tests are accurate (and that's a big if), is the CYA and Free Chlorine levels.

90 is quite high assuming you're using liquid chlorine to sanitize and 0.9ppm FC is WAY, WAY too low.

Edit: just saw drsipe's post. Do what he suggests.

Okay. So the last 2 days I have eliminated water out of the pool past the skimmer (approx. 7 inches each day) and replaced with fresh water. after the first day my CYA lowered to 60. I slammed the pool last night using 6,3.6 liter jugs of liquid pool bleach. This morning the pool is marginally clearer but still can't see the bottom in deep end. Of course my pump/filter has been running continuously so where do I go from here??? Or do I just wait a few days to see what happens?

Thanks

You cant slam the pool in one night.
Using the poolmath app, add 5 ppm liquid chlorine daily untill your test kit arrives

MY test kit came in today. CYA=100 Free Chlorine= 7.8 PH=7.6
Total Alkalinity=103 Total Hardness= 283

Last Wednesday my CYA according to a friend of mine who has been using Taylor kits for several years said my CYA=60

I am wondering how my CYA could have increased over a week when I have only added liquid Chlorine and PH reducer??

Thanks

I have since my previous post spoken to my friend who did the CYA test at 60 last week and he said perhaps his reagent may be old. His water is crystal clear so he has not had to worry too much about the CYA. His is consistently at 30

Draining/refilling is the answer. If you are at 100ppm CYA, you need to do a 50%, drain and refill. Doing 5 drain/refills is not the same dilution as 1 50% drain/refill. If you want continue these small drain/refills, check the CYA levels after circulating the fresh water for 20-30 minutes, and repeat tlll the CYA is at the desired level.
