Plaster Day & Initial Water Chemistry-How Important?

Dumb question I’m sure but here goes…..

Going to be 78-80F and sunny this weekend. Pool water as of this morning is 61F

Can I take the initial dip this weekend while the plaster is still in this 28 day period? Obviously we have no salt yet so is that dangerous to swim without chlorine?

The only danger would be to the plaster damage from something hitting it hard but probably low risk. There should be a little chlorine in there even if you aren’t using the salt chlorinator. It was day 4 or 5 I thought was ok for chlorine.

My new neurotic compulsion as of today is the water line…

How much water should a pool lose to evaporation overnight?

I swear I’m losing like 1/4-1/2” of water since I topped it up mid tile yesterday morning….

It’s been fairly warm during the days (70s) and very cold at night (30s) with some heavy wind yesterday.

Is this normal? Do smaller pools evaporate quicker?

Check your equipment pad for any drips.

No drips. We did a pressure test before plaster and that all checked out good

It has been 30-50 mph winds past 2-3 days

Does that play a factor I’m sure?
Wind like that could be a factor. Take a paper towel and wipe it around any fitting on the equipment. That can sometimes find a very slow leak. I found a loose fitting on the filter yesterday doing that. It was a little wet but dripping so slow that it didn’t show up on the pad.

Also measure exsctly how much the level is going down. Sometimes paranoia makes the leak worse. 😉 put a piece of tape on the tile at the water level and check 24 hours later.

You can do a bucket test to check for leaks, but what you are describing sounds normal. That is a really nice setting and a good looking pool.

Thank you for the kind words on the build and garden

See pics attached. I taped the water line as close as I could at about 7:30AM before leaving for work.

Just got home and it has indeed dropped

It’s been about 40MPH sustained winds most of today and very very cold only highs in the 40s

Would this be cause of concern?

I’m gonna try the bucket test as well

Dye tests weren’t really conclusive of any leaks. Dye just essentially ran down the wall past the returns to the floor. Essentially same result inside the skimmer

Granted it’s too cold to climb in and test the floor drains but I’m guessing the 1/2-1 inch of loss over the last 36-48 hours was truly just evaporation from heavy wind and low humidity

Have you actually measured it at 1” loss? Do a real bucket test.
