Piping for Pool Heater

I am considering buying a pool heater, most likely a heat pump. It would need to be located about 20' from my existing pump/filter setup. So I would need to extend the water line to it and back. (40' total run). Do you think that will cause a problem with the pump and system to add that much run?

I also could install a few valves that would allow me to bypass the heater during the months it would not be used. Is that a bad idea to have the heater without water flow for several months?

A 20' run to the heater will be no problem for your IntelliFlo pump. You will need to run your IntelliFlo at a higher RPM to get the same flow you have now. Not because of the distance but because of the restriction the HP introduces.

A heater bypass is recommended..
