My first swim in a hotel pool since becoming a TFP'er. I know, I know, I shouldn't be surprised...
I took Friday off and spent 6 hours doing physical labor. By 4 pm, I had more aches and pains than I could stand. The hotel pool and spa were empty, and it was still before the Friday check-in rush, so I figured there was a good chance the water was still balanced and filtered from the quiet weekdays.
I noticed staining around the perimeter of the pool on my way to the CC-spewing spa. The hotel is only 3-4 years old, so that struck me as odd. I wondered if it was maybe metals? After the spa had choked me out and heated me up, I took a dip in the pool.
It wasn't staining, the surface was eroding - the dark area was rough and in some areas was down to the gunite. Some of what I thought was staining was dead algae! The pump wasn't running. The only return was at the steps, where staining wasn't evident.
Any guesses of what's happening here? Clearly the pool is under-sanitized, but what's eroding it? Is it as simple as low pH?
