Phosphates

Please note that household plain bleach is the *exact same chemical as pool store "liquid chlorine""* The only difference is bleach tends to be slightly weaker.

The pool stores often warn folks not to use bleach as they lose the sale of chlorine products.

Walmart plain bleach seems to be the best deal around right now..... one gallon of 6% for something like 1.77?

Store never said not to use bleach, just the manual.

Thank you all. The only thing I've ever added was chlorine and in the beginning, some baking soda. Nothing more. Oh and tablets in the floAter. Here are my test results. CYA is 4

An example of how little you should trust that pool store, they say your CYA is 45 (always round up, so it's really 50), and that your FC should be 1-4ppm. If you read the FC/CYA chart, you should never let your FC fall below 4, even tho they claim it's fine down to 1!! You should be targeting 6-8ppm every day, and I like to add enough bleach to get to the max recommended amount, which is double what you're actually at. That's assuming the pool store test is even remotely accurate, and judging from there ranges, I'd be scared to trust them on anything at all. Compare their ranges to what Pool School recommends.

Also, Walmarts 2 pack of 10% liquid chlorine is one of the best deals around. Comes out to just 25¢ per ounce of actual chlorine.

Something to note. When Sodium Hypochlorite is dissolved in water it is referred to as 'bleach' regardless of intended use or concentration (%).

Sodium hypochlorite is a chemical compound with the formula NaClO. It is composed of a sodium cation (Na+
) and a hypochlorite anion (ClO−
); it may also be viewed as the sodium salt of hypochlorous acid. When dissolved in water it is commonly known as bleach or liquid bleach.

I had a coupon so went to the local pool store to get some liquid chlorine. Just for fun I had them test my water. They were under by 20 on my cya and phosphates were 1200 [emoji6] I have had a crystal clear pool for three years.

Lol I get it now. So a gallon of bleach is a buck for a gallon and chlorine is $3 for 2 gallons. If i can use it, I'm in.

Look at the percentage of chlorine in the bleach liquid chlorine. The PoolMath mobile app has a calculator on it for comparing bleach prices. A lot of time, the higher percentage chlorine costs more overall, but has more chlorine in it and ends up costing less for how much chlorine is it.
