PH won't stay down

Our pool has been doing great using the pool calculator but the PH keeps climbing up. We add muraic acid but it never comes down below 7.8 and we are trying to get it to 7.2 even adding the chemicals the pool calculator recommends, it doesn't ever come down below 7.8. Is there something else we can use besides the muraic acid? What about the PH down stuff? TIA

PH tends to climb in pools with new plaster or good amounts of aeration. Does any of that apply to you?

Stay away from the pH down stuff from the pool store. Muriatic acid is the best to use, although there is the typical 31.5% versus half strength, so make sure you are using the correct % needed. Aiming for a pH of 7.2 is a bit low unless you are preparing for a SLAM Process. Is that the case, or was there some other reason you wanted such a low pH? Some pools simply operate on the upper end of the pH scale better, and depending on your other chemistry (i.e. TA, CH, water temp), a higher pH may be better for your plaster. If you wish, post all of your tests results for us and we'll look at the entire picture.

My CYA is 30, everything else is fine so I am not going to stress about it too much like you say. It might be due to aeration, we had a black algae problem and had to drain completely, pressure wash and fill again, slam etc. Its been looking great since them but the plaster took a bit of a beating. It probably needs to replastered in a year or two.

Just to clarify, Your pH WILL come down with muriatic acid........that's undeniable.

Check the strength of your muriatic, check everything that might cause an error but you can be certain the pH will come down and that muriatic is the best thing to do that.

Like Texas Splash, I would suggest you shoot for 7.4 or 7.5.

Are you using PoolMath to calculate your doses?

everything else is fine?????
what is your ta number, including your fill water and your ch number
high ta will keep pushing your ph up
let your ta drop to 60 and try to not adjust your ph so low
aim for 7.6 to 7.8
dose with muriatic acid when it hits 8.0 assuming reasonable ch numbers
it will quickly rise from 7.0 to 7.6 but from 7.6 to 7.8 will take a lot longer

I had a similar problem when I started maintaining my pool. I didn’t realize the muriatic acid Home Depot sells locally in CA is not full strength and I was calculating incorrectly. I think it was around 13%. High TA was also causing it to rise fast, but I knew that was an issue.
