Marillion Fan, you have my condolences. I just lost my green buddy, Lizzie, after 7 years. He was so special to our family, but I was the one who took care of him. It broke my heart, and he died very tragically. He misjudged a jump and fractured his collarbone and shoulder. There was brain damage also that wasn't evident at first. As much as I tried to fix him, I just couldn't. He passed last Tuesday morning.

Rest In Peace, Lizzie....

Sorry to hear of the loss Vegas... Must not have been a good year for Lizards.

New dog, Lynch. He's a 2 year old Border Collie/Jack Russel Terrier. Too cold to introduce him to the pool though. Keeping a close eye on them outside until it's frozen good.

Oudoors-Kenai and Kodiak (Alaskan Malamute and White Wolf/Malamute Hybrid). They are 4 and 8 in this picture. Kenai topped out at 100 lbs and Kodiak at 140. Kenai died at 14 and Kodiak at 16! They both pre-dated the pool, but for many years they had a stock tank all summer in which to splash around. When they got near ponds or lakes, Kenai would delicately wade the edges, Kodiak would go snorkeling. As Kenai got older, we put a staircase in and out of of the stock tank for her. Eventually they dug their own pond in our front yard.
We're waiting to get dogs again for a while- 16 years of enormous, excavator dog can take a toll on property- we have to rebuild several sections of fence before we do dogs again. Wish they could have dug the pool for us- would have been cheaper.
Indoors- two very spoiled senior Persian cats-Isaac and Rebecca- the golden (brown) one died last year also at 13 yo. Becca is 12 this year and has been blind since she was 5 yo. Definitely no swimming- only baths, and those are traumatic.

Also, outdoors, and a real job to keep separate from the dogs while the dogs were still alive- 2 black and white tuxedo cats- both strays. The female (Sophie- 10 yo) was feral and had to be trapped as a kitten. The male (Fearless- 4 yo) was a "drop-off" kitten- someone dumped him on our road. He has mental problems- he's insane. But they are good hunters- my husband has to clean out their dead mouse stash in the shop regularly- and that's the ones they don't eat. Sophie a definite no on swimming, Fearless a frightening "maybe". Liner + desperate crazy cat with claws= !!!!!

My favorite pictures of Kodiak- we had a rare Valentine's Day Snow her in Texas in 2004. Kenai had already passed away, so Kodiak was out making tracks in our front yard as the lone wolf. He was 12 when this picture was taken, and still weighed 140 lbs. He would have loved the pool- he lived to swim- but probably the pool would not have loved him.

My rotty Zachary passed away on March 4th this year. It was one of the worst days of my life because I had to put him down. He was in so much pain from hip troubles and his eyes told me the night before that he had had enough. I miss him so much to this day but I am okay with knowing he is not in anymore pain and waiting for me on the other side. I cried so much for him, in such a selfish way because I didn't want to let him go but I did it for him. I always think of him and wish I could hold him one more time and tell him what a good boy he was but I can't. It was like losing my son, I loved him so very much. He was the best dog I ever had. He looked mean and vicious but he never once bit anyone... well, except for that time he nipped me in the butt cuz he thought I was gonna hurt DH.

Well, soon after Zachary passed away, I got a new baby. I can't believe my baby Ava will be 4 months old tomorrow! 8) She is a full blooded boxer girl reversed brindle with a splash of flash on her chest.

We went out last week and played with some bubbles for the first time. I think she liked them, what do you think?

Today, I put my steps in the pool. It was very hot out so what better way of spending a warm day than with the hose!

Here she is taking her first dip in the pool. Needless to say, she didn't like it. She likes the hose better.

On the other hand, My girl Casey loves the pool!

She says MaMa! I could do this all day!!! And she could if I let her! She thinks it's her pool! I hate to tell the kids that it really is!

I wish I could have updated with better news than my Boy's passing but Ava has been a life saver for me. She will never replace Zachary but she has helped fill the emense void Zachary left me. I told him that day that I loved him so very much and he took my heart with him. I had the Boy cremated. He sits not far from me on the computer stand with several pictures of him surrounding his box. He may be gone but he's never forgotten. RIP Big Boy!

This is our rescue shih-tzu, Payson. We adopted him after losing Lacy (at 17 yrs - brain cancer) and Cagney (at 18 yrs. - mammory gland cancer). I got C&L when they were 3 weeks old because "Mama Angel" refused to nurse. Lots of years with lots of joyous memories. We started over with Payson, who was slated to be euthanized and was rescued as he was a "dead dog walking". He's our pride and joy! First picture is him outsmarting me! I'd covered all doors/ windows so he'd stop barking and he figured out how to see out anyway!. Second picture, napping with his lovies.

One more post here to say how sorry I am for all the losses. They hurt so much because these furkids are indeed, our KIDS! It takes a long time to get over the loss and oftentimes, people just don't understand how someone can cry over the loss of "just a dog, cat, horse, lizzie, etc." So it's been a blessing to come to this topic and be able to share the loss, as well as the joy in moving on, with others who understand. Before Payson, I'd filled my loss with Beanie Babies, to the tune of 800 of them -- thank goodness for Payson!

I hope a speedy recovery for those recent losses and know that you are not alone - we're here!

Just A Dog

From time to time people tell me, "Lighten up, It's just a dog." or
"That’s a lot of money for just a dog."
They don’t understand the distance traveled, time spent,
or costs involved for "Just A Dog".
Some of my proudest moments have come about with "Just A Dog".
Many Hours have passed with my only company being "Just A Dog",
and not once have I felt Slighted.
Some of my saddest moments were brought about by “Just A Dog”.
In Those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “Just A Dog”
provided comfort and purpose to overcome the day.

If you, too, think its “Just A Dog” you will probably understand phrases like
“Just A friend”, “Just A Sunrise”, or “Just A Promise”.
“Just A Dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, and pure unbridled joy.
“Just A Dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.
Because of “Just A Dog” I will rise early, take long walks, and look longingly to the future.

For me and folks like me, it’s not “Just A Dog”. It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,
the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.
“Just A Dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts
away from myself and my worries of the day.

I hope that someday people can understand it’s not “Just A Dog”
It’s the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being
“Just A Man” or “Just A Woman”

So the next time you hear the phrase “Just A Dog”, smile
Because they “Just Don’t Understand”

This is a great thread!

We have 2 dogs who love the pool, one especially - Logan, our Australian Cattle Dog, is a freak at the pool! Our red ACD Maggie Mae is more like my mom was during "Rest Period" at the neighborhood pool when we were kids...takes one very girly lap without even getting her head wet. :)

We often joke that ours is a Dog Pool and we are merely the "Pool Boys."

This is Isaac, our Lab and my heart dog, now at the Rainbow Bridge:

And Logan, the pool maniac:

I also did a video of them to "Soak up the Sun" by Sheryl Crow. I uploaded it to youtube but they turned the audio off! Some sort of silly copywrite thing! Can you believe it??? It's SOOOO much funner to watch with the music. Anyone have a server I can upload it to? :sun: Here's the soundless version:

One more. Bored yet? :hammer:

One more in addition to my last post...last summer I hosted a Cattle Dog Fun Day at my house for the rescue group I am a member of - Carolina Australian Cattle Dog Rescue & Rebound. 20 ACDs over! We let them each have a turn at swimming just a couple at a time so we could manage them and teach them how to get in and out using the steps. Talk about a dog pool!

It's my opinion that all dogs should have a pool! :whoot:

Here's Bo, our adopted sun conure. A couple brought him in to the pet store where the DW used to work, and asked that he be given to a good home. They had bought him for their daughter, and she had moved away to college and they didn't pay the attention to him that he needed. He had plucked his legs, back, and breast bare before we brought him home, and within 3 months had grown most of the feathers back.
