The motors may or may not be ok, it just depends on why they are not working.. In the big picture there is not much you can do to the motors that make sense for most robot owners...
But.. One of the things that will make the robot fail its self-test is if it takes too much effort to move the tracks.. If the robots thinks the motors are working too hard, the robot will fail its initial self-test and just shut off..
When the bearing surfaces have too much slop this makes it harder for the motors to move the tracks.. So, if the robot is having problems, it makes sense to try new wheel kits.. They don't cost much, and are pretty easy to replace.
