So about your spa.... you only flow to your spa for 30 minutes 2x/day and you don't have any issues with algae growth?

Never have had an algae problem in my spa.

Did u base your spa flow requirements on turnover or something else? Is there a recommended turnover rate to keep the water clear if I was picking a rate (gpm) and time to run water to the spa?

My spillway runs at 1700 RPM and my VSF pump says 44 GPM.

In 20 minutes that is 880 gallons put through maybe a 500 gallon spa twice a day.

Your pump is going to push more than 40 GPM if you have a good spillover flow. Run your spillover for 20 minutes or so twice a day and you will be fine.

Best I can tell, the pump reports are pretty accurate if they're actually volt-amps as @JamesW said. When I changed from a 1.5 HP constant speed pump to current VSP, I estimated how much the monthly kwh ought to decrease based on those reports. When I assumed the power factor at my house is 0.8 - which is pretty typical - the numbers matched up. I was doing the same OCD thing as you. But when I figured out the cost of running the VSP was about 75 cents a day, I gave up.

NB: I run 1100 rpm, 99 watts, 38 gpm, 21 hours a day. The spill-over spa to just trickles a bit at this speed. (Sounds like the Alhambra; love it.) Morning and evening 1.5 hours each are 2000 rpm, 990 watts, 83 gpm for FC in the spa, skimming and running the pressure-side cleaner. This moves about 61k gallons per day. The FC in the spa stays within about 1 ppm of the pool.

Good info! Thanks. I need to test my spa to see where my chlorine levels are in comparison. I dont know why i haven't considered that until today. It is definitely a benchmark to help me understand if I'm getting enough chlorination to the spa.
